"In 1972, Houlihan's first opened its doors in Kansas City with a progressive, eclectic menu and energetic bar scene. Ferns hung throughout, artifacts cluttered the walls and tapestries made by San Francisco hippies formed the ceiling. Caviar burgers, roasted duck, foot-long hot dogs and fresh carrot juice were just a few original menu items so ahead for its time. It was hot.
Before long, there were a lot of 'casual dining' restaurants opening and call us crazy, but they looked a whole lot like us. We tried to be flattered. Some grew really big, and by the '90s, the whole 'casual dining' landscape was pretty me-too. Instead of watching the consumer, the industry seemed more worried about what competitors were doing. Casual dining lost its way, and in doing so lost its edge.
Fast forward to 2002. That's when we had our 'Aha!' moment (as Oprah would say). New leadership, new ideas, new inspiration. We completely re-imagined ourselves, and got back in touch with the consumer. New menus. New plates. New building design, new soundtrack. Stylish uniforms. And a modern, warm restaurant design with an open kitchen and prominent bar. Today, our company is built entirely around what the progressive consumer seeks in a restaurant + bar experience. And we plan to keep it that way.
Forget 'casual dining.' That's an industry term so out of touch with how consumers eat and drink today. For premium quality and style; fare that's at times familiar and other times adventurous and a laid-back modern setting, Houlihan's is a true original."

"It's all Greek to guests this family owned Indianapolis restaurant. Greek favorites like gyros topped with onions, tomatoes, tzaziki and cheese and pitas filled with humus are just two of the traditional lunch choices. All sandwiches come served with a side that changes each and every day. Dinner is the busiest time at Greek Islands. On Friday and Saturday evenings, live belly dancers will entertain you while you dine. The rest of the week you will have to let the food keep you entertained. With over a dozen entrees to choose from, it can be difficult zeroing in on just one. If it is your first time sampling Greek food, you may want to stick with Pasticchio. It has a truly American feel with ground beef and macaroni noodles topped with a layer of bechamel sauce and a sprinkle of cheese. All dinner entrees are served with a salad, bread, rice pilaf, and vegetable. -- Chris Saunders "

Owners Greg Hardesty and Michael Sylvia have created a sophisticaed and intimate restaurant in the heart of the Mass. Avenue Arts District in downtown Indianpolis serving contemporary American fare using the best produce, fresh seafood and artisanal mead and game from Indiana and around the world. "Comfy booths, eclectic light fixtures, and a trendy, boxy bar are the setting for 14 West's innovative New American cuisine. A menu with globe-spanning influences specializes in seafood dishes; tuna tartare, tempura calamari salad, and pan-seared scallops in tomato confit all come with recommendations. Not a seafood fan? Try dry-rubbed steak, a pork chop with pear chutney, or duck satay. Upon request, your waiter can suggest a wine choice with your entree. Piped-in jazz ups the cool factor."

"The R bistro concept is a classically simple one: fresh local ingredients, menus that change weekly to take advantage of those ingredients, and a chef/owner with European training. Not a typical offering for the middle of middle America, but Chef Regina Mehallick is making a go of this 56-seat downtown Indianapolis eatery by dedicating her time and her talent to bringing exquisite home cooking and the potential of local ingredients to her customers. Farm-influenced American, Mediterranean, and English dishes all find their way onto her menus, translated through seasonally-available Hoosier ingredients. Week to week, the featured dishes could include seared breast of pheasant with organic red garnet sweet potatoes and braised bourbon cabbage or maybe in the Summer it will be ginger-mango marinated flank steak with lemon fennel slaw, with the names of the farmers noted right on the menu"

"From dry-aging steaks on premises to helping select the perfect wine complements from a list of over 400, we’ll surround you with the very best. That includes the surroundings themselves. We realize the first things you’ll notice at The Capital Grille may not be hand-crafted mahogany, plush leather or distinctive art. The aroma of sizzling steaks guarantees that. It won’t be long, though, before you appreciate the rich, club-like atmosphere that led The Miami Herald to refer to us as a, “culinary theme park full of dark wood, stuffed game heads, cigars, high-end drinks, wines and dry aged steaks.” Come and enjoy the ride yourself."

"Keep your eyes on the road, your hands upon the wheel!" Jim Morrison and the Doors immortalized the feeling of driving fast and hard on the open road, and the Indy 500 celebrates living hard and driving harder on a closed road. Sure, driving may have been what originally put this city on the map, but it's the Hard Rock Cafe Indianapolis that really revs you up and makes this city worth the drive. Whether you want to fuel up with a good meal or drown the engine's roar with great rocking tunes, don't miss this high-octane cafe. We're sure the Lizard King himself would say "The Mid-West is the best" if he happened to cruise on by and check out our creatively covered walls hailing rock 'n' roll history, but modern day legends like yourselves are what's making this cafe great right now. So when it comes to dining out, you're sure to find this Cafe's a winner. Race on over now! "

"When Pete and Antonia Iaria came to Indianapolis in 1913, they brought two little pieces of Calabria, Italy with them. One was the gift of Italian hospitality. The other was Antonia's spaghetti sauce recipe. Today, nearly a century later, both of these pieces of Italy are alive and well at Iaria's. The restaurant is located on the site of Pete and Antonia's home and is still owned by the Iaria family. They still serve our homemade pasta topped with Antonia's original spaghetti sauce."

"Harry Roth and Izzy Rosen were longtime friends. They met at the age of 10 and continued their friendship throughout high school. They attended Old Manual High in Indianapolis. Izzy was a good student. At the age of 13, he worked outside at the City Market selling produce and meats with his mother after his father passed. Harry attended Monroe College of Optometry and lived in Chicago's Loop area. In 1946, Harry's brothers Sam and Ike purchased St. Elmo Steak House, and shortly after, invited Harry to become a partner in the restaurant. He borrowed $10,000, said, "Farewell" to Chicago - "going from eye glasses to bar glasses" - and returned to his stomping grounds. Meanwhile, Izzy was still in Indy, now working as a bookie. In 1956, Sam and Ike left the business, and Harry asked his longtime friend Izzy to join him as a 50/50 partner in St. Elmo. Harry always wore brightly colored and patterned bow ties, which he wore in lieu of long ties; this to appease his wife, who was not fond of him coming home with cocktail sauce staining the long ties he wore when he started working at St. Elmo. Kindly, warm and charming, Harry is the perfect antithesis of his friend and business partner, Izzy. A man of few words, behind Izzy's large personality and even larger cigars, was a man's man. Harry and Izzy were the quintessential "Odd Couple." After a lifetime of friendship and building St. Elmo Steak House into a hugely successful business, we now celebrate the personalities of both Harry and Izzy in a more casual and updated environment."
